Helping students to achieve comprehension of subject matter appears as one of the aims of schooling that is beyond dispute. However, the development of a somewhat opposed capability, awareness of unknowns or of not having understood, is increasingly considered an important educational aim as well. In fact, knowing when one does not know is regarded as fundamental for such educationally relevant activities as question generation. It is also possible to find in the literature a long history of researchers who have advocated learning environments that support inquiry learning and the acquisition of self-regulated strategies. Nevertheless, previous research identified the scarceness of questions asked by students in normal classroom, and that most of the questions asked are shallow. The Open Course Ware Pupils Questions in Science Education aims to contribute to the characterization of pupils questioning and conscious unknowns in different pedagogical contexts, to characterize quality criteria for pupils questions, to describe pupils and teachers’ perceptions about why do (or do not pupils) ask questions in class and to analyze how to promote pupils questioning in class. The course is structured in modules. Along the modules, participants will learn to analyze pupils’ questions according to the taxonomies proposed, to identify quality criteria of pupils’ questions, to characterize the process of questioning and strategies to promote it. The course also aims to contribute to the professional development of teachers through collaborative work and educational research on the topic. Participants in the open course will be involved in the development of a research about pupils’ questioning and actively participate gathering and analyzing data and discussion the results. The format of the OCW will allow the inclusion of diverse type of methods, namely: i) taped lectures on key topics; ii) online seminars and workshops on practical aspects as questions classification; iii) planning of pedagogical contexts that promote questioning. Some tasks and activities will be developed autonomously and individually.
